Character Background and Description
Tareth Merrick was born to a family of farmers near Harvest Hall. He was taught early on that a measure of a man was his might. Without physical prowess, there were no means for any further gains. He was put to work on his family’s grain farm at an early age and learned the value of a silver stag even sooner. Tareth dreamt of being a knight when he was just a small farm boy, and would watch the soldiers of House Selmy fight on the grounds of Harvest Hall. Hearing stories of Ser Barristan the Bold in King’s Landing gave him hope that some day he would take up arms in the name of the Stormlands and of Westeros. When Ronard Rhyferth was granted Tempest Hold and the lands surrounding it by Lyonel Selmy, Tareth and his family were called upon to help settle the land there.

As a teenager, Tareth spent his spare time practicing the sword fighting techniques he acquired from watching the soldiers at Harvest Hall. When he was able, he would watch and mimic the soldiers of House Rhyferth as well. One day, while practicing his swordsmanship outside the keep of Tempest Hold, Darius Rhyferth saw Tareth in the bushes watching him practice. Darius approached him and asked him what he was doing there, to which Tareth sheepishly explained that he had always wanted to be a knight, and that he spent a lot of time watching and mimicking soldiers skirmish so that he may gain the practice necessary to be one. Darius was so impressed by Tareth’s honesty and determination, that he invited him to practice with him that day. Within moments Tareth had completely disarmed the young Rhyferth in single combat, and so had begun a lifelong friendship between the two. Years later, as Darius took on the role as interim head of House Rhyferth, he called upon Tareth to be one of his personal guard. Tareth had become a fearsome combatant and a true brother for the young heir, and as such it was only fitting that Darius trust Tareth with his life.
