House History

The history of House Rhyferth starts with the lust of Lyonel Selmy. Lyonel was a landed knight who was of great virtue in the eyes of the world, except he had fathered many bastards. This was unknown to all, except for his children. His youngest son, Garon Selmy, knew his father thought him to be incompetent. When Lyonel’s eldest son Barristan Selmy forfeited his claim in order to become a Kingsguard, Lyonel looked to Barristan’s cousin to be heir. Garon Selmy began threatening to tell the world of Lyonel’s bastards if he was not given his birthright.

Lyonel looked to two of his bastards to solve the issue. The younger Channer Storm was a lowly bandit, and the older Ronard Storm was trying to live virtuously as a hedge knight. Lyonel promised to land them if they could kill Garon Selmy without suspicion. Ronard hired an apothecary to craft a poison to kill Garon, while Channer Storm organized a bandit raid to cover up the death. Lyonel Selmy lied to the public and said that Ronard had tried saving his son. For the virtuous and selfless act, Ronard would become a landed knight. A small patch of land was given to Ronard in between House Selmy and Caron. Ronard founded a new house upon this land and chose the name Rhyferth for it's age old translation meaning "a violent gust", and the correlation to his bastard surname of Storm.

For many years Ronard expanded the lands and connections of House Rhyferth with honor and political savvy, while Channer enjoyed the luxuries that his older brother wrought. Ronard wisely invested the prosperity of House Rhyferth into clearing the forests to the north for farmland and restoring Tempest Hold, located near a trickling stream (now known as Rhyferth's Creek), which served as the seat of his power. The grains reaped from the farms were sold to the rest of the Stormlands, bringing in further wealth and lowering the reliance of the Stormlands on produce from the Reach.

When Robert's Rebellion broke out, House Rhyferth dedicated all the soldiers, food, and political connections they could. These were resources that House Rhyferth never got back as much of their soldiers died in the war. Ronard set off to fight in the war, leaving the house in the hands of his brother Channer. Channer grew to enjoy the power, and upon his older brother’s return concocted a plan. He chose to poison his older brother, who had no children of his own, instead focusing on bringing House Rhyferth to further prosperity. After Channer became head of House Rhyferth he made sure to publicly execute all of Ronard’s associates for treason. Instead of being amiable towards the farmers he punished them if they did not meet his quotas. People began to assume Channer was nothing like his brother, and furthermore had a hand in the mysterious and sudden death of Ronard.

Channer did not have the savvy required to run a house of the Stormlands. He ended up selling much of the land his brother had acquired to House Selmy or House Caron, and the coffers dwindled due to his poor investments and addiction to exotic luxuries.

House Current Status

Channer is now in bad health and is only able to talk briefly, always interrupted by bouts of coughing. His son and only heir, Darius, rules over the matters of House Rhyferth in his stead with the help of the Castellan, Cerran Fender. He occasionally visits his father's bed to consult him on matters, but does not find the political life as troublesome as his father did. Time has proven that he is not from the same vein as his father, and takes more after his uncle Ronard. The people like him more than his father and believe that he may bring glory back to the house, but are skeptical of any man related to Channer the Unkind. House Rhyferth continues to utilize its plains and grasslands for grain farming and is largely self sustained, despite how much it has declined over recent years. With Darius serving in his father's stead, House Rhyferth has begun to look to other nearby houses for support and possible alliances so that it may bolster itself in the coming years.

Travels To King's Landing

In order to rally support for House Rhyferth's restoration, Darius is heading to meet with his half-uncle Barristan Selmy, with the hopes of being able to network with Renly Baratheon, the Master of Law in King's Landing, but also the leader of the Storm's End and the Stormlands as a whole. The goal is to send messengers to gift Barristan, Renly, and King Robert with (silk?) and then hopefully set up a meeting. House Rhyferth desires to expand their control over trade and agriculture through these meetings. Meeting with Barristan is thought to be the easiest meeting to obtain, and by doing so they hope he will help them to build a stronger connection to the flourishing agriculture that House Selmy has control over. At the very least they hope to meet merchants in King's Landing who could help them expand their coffers.

Accompanying Darius are: his personal guard (Artemis Rane, Tareth Merrick, and others), Ashter Varner, Brenum Fentus and Aiana Bayle.

Personal Guard: Artemis Rane, Tareth Merrick, and 3 other guardsmen.
Scouts: Ashter Varner and 2 trusted scouts.
Servants: 3 servants for menial tasks like fetching water, cooking, or cleaning

Darius' mother, Maester Kober, and the Castellan (Cerran Fender), are all staying behind to take care of his father and the house.

They are staying at Raist's Respite, a small inn that will barely fit all 14 of them (the servants can sleep on the floor). The Rhyferth's are not wealthy, so choosing an inn frequently lived in by merchants and craftsmen is not exactly something they wish to be known.
